NBA Rare Space

A garden designed in response to the experience of living with rare forms of dementia, particularly conditions affecting visual and spatial perception. The scheme explored how a landscape could support independence, offering clarity, calm and ease of movement within a carefully structured setting.

A simple layout formed the basis of the design, with a continuous path guiding movement through the space. Contrasting materials and colour were used to define key elements: seating, thresholds and shelter, helping visitors to orientate themselves and navigate with confidence.

Planting was considered in response to sensory experience, with species selected to avoid visual confusion while still providing texture and seasonal change. Together, the elements created a garden that balanced accessibility with a sense of refuge, shaped as much by care and understanding as by form.
