LTT Garden

A garden inspired by the resilience of communities living in refugee camps, reflecting the everyday landscapes of Domiz in northern Iraq. The design explored how gardens are created in challenging conditions, using simple, readily available materials to establish beauty, productivity and a sense of home.

Concrete and steel formed the primary structure, with screens and detailing referencing traditional Islamic patterns. An ‘innovation wall’ incorporated tin cans, bottles and other found objects as planting containers, while a central fountain and radiating water channels introduced movement and cooling, echoing systems of reuse within the camp.

Planting was both productive and ornamental, with fruit trees, herbs and drought-tolerant species reflecting those grown in the region. Together, the elements created a garden that was practical and expressive, shaped by necessity but rooted in care and making.
